Do the teachers in the DLI program have bridging time? Meaning, do the Chinese teacher’s partner teach the same content in the same way in the English classroom?

01:02:29
Will there be information about promoting and marketing dual language preschools?

01:02:36
Thank you for your questions! Please share your thoughts and questions with us. We will ask our speakers to address them at the end of the webinar.

01:03:12
Hi Robin, when children learn Chinese early, the linguistic difficulties reduce right?

Montessori is quite popular in Bay Area

01:13:26
They're more focus on numeracy instead of literacy

01:14:37
Montessori has different areas of subjects including language. I am doing fieldwork in Mandarin-English bilingual Montessori preschools in Bay Area and they are trying very hard to support the learning of Mandarin in class

01:14:53
There is a Montessori Chinese-English bilingual/immersion School in Minnesota.

01:15:19
With the benefits of early exposure to a language, would love to see more 100% immersion early-year programs.

01:19:42
How many samples in this survey?

01:26:10
E conflicts with salary map.

01:27:49
The findings are so interesting

01:28:39
This is a super presentation! Much appreciation for your time.

01:28:42
Agree!

01:29:17
Can we join in from Australia?

01:31:36
concur

01:41:54
I love this picture!

01:42:03
In USA, how to balance Chinese learning and English learning in preschool setting is a challenging. Children need to learn both English and Chinese. How do we prepare the students from 100% Chinese immersion program to enter a English speaking K-12 system?

01:42:56
can you please paste the link in the chat box? thanks!

01:42:58
Could you please share the link into the chat?

Thank you for the answer~

01:45:20
This is my question “ how to promote 2nd language in US to be a mandatory in US”

01:45:54
Robin: Could you please share the research work you just mentioned? Thanks!

01:47:26
Bing, here is the citation: Xu, X., Padilla, A. M., & Silva, D. M. (2015). Learner Performance in Mandarin Immersion and high school world language programs: A comparison. Foreign Language Annals, 48(1), 26–38. https://doi.org/10.1111/flan.12123

01:47:36
Thank you!

01:48:04
You’re welcome!

01:48:36
Well noted, Susan - reminds me of the conversation about how we’re educating “elective bilinguals” vs. bilinguals for heritage language maintenance

01:50:34
Join CELIN first.

01:51:25
If US require 2nd language to be mandatory subject in middle school will help students pay more attention in any of the 2nd language level

01:51:32
What are some good online engagement strategies for pre school?

01:54:39
@Xinye and @Zhang - thank you for sharing about your respective Montessori school experiences. I wish we had captured your schools in our survey!

01:55:48
For Kevin, can you say a bit more about the difference between “elective bilinguals” vs. bilinguals for heritage language maintenance?

01:56:18
Thank you

01:58:49
In my school, Chinese teachers teach math, science and Mandarin; while the English partner teacher teach the other subjects. As for the bridging time, my students understand the math concept in Chinese, but they cannot bridge the same thing in English. Moreover, their math tests are in English.

01:59:06
@Yulan: While the former often includes English speakers who “elect” to learn a new language to build their skillset (so, a privilege); Heritage language maintenance is often from immigrant populations who need to maintain their heritage language or they lose it to English (not necessarily from a privileged context)

01:59:44
We just received our CCRPI score for our dual immersion language school yesterday. It was 97.7.

01:59:57
@Mamta: SUCH a good question and I want to know the answer too. There’s research coming out now because of COVID.

02:00:09
My school doesn’t allowed my English partner to teach the same content in English. Do you have any suggestions?

02:00:30
Lingjing, math concepts are same in English and Chinese; it’s the language of math that students need to understand in English.

02:00:55
They might need some practice in word problems, etc. in English (or, much as I hate to say it, test prep in math in English…..)

02:00:57
Math is an universal language.

02:01:44
I think my question is my young learners couldn’t bridge them by themselves. Some of them don’t have the English prior knowledge.

02:01:57
Immersion teacher and English teacher should take more time on co-planning.

02:02:43
Thank you very much for a very informative and thought provoking session. My audio is not working so I can’t hear anyone. Would appreciate recording of this meeting. 🙏🏼

02:02:55
Apologies, everyone, but I have to log off to attend a student’s doctoral defense that begins now. It was wonderful to be here and learn from everybody. Please feel free to contact me at kevin.wong@pepperdine.edu for continued conversation!

02:03:06
Thank you Kevin!

02:03:33
Thanks for the presentations! Thanks for the organizers!

02:03:55
Agree

02:04:37
Lingjing, I think your students do need some practice in understanding the way math concepts are presented in English. Ideally the English side teachers can incorporate some math concepts, word problems, etc. into their teaching of other content areas.

02:04:47
Thank you for great information and presentations!

02:04:59
same in Australia

02:05:00
Thank you CELIN for organizing this important conversation and presentation!

Thank you for the presentation!

02:06:28
Robin, thank you. However, my school doesn’t allow my partner to do so. They say it is then not Immersion.

02:06:40
And many thanks to Shuhan!

02:06:40
So much exciting work to do and explore! Thanks for all the presenters and CELIN!
