Description
South Koreans head to the polls on June 3 to elect a new president following the successful impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol in April after his declaration of martial law in December 2024. Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK)—who ran against Yoon in 2022—faces Kim Moon-soo of the People Power Party (PPP), as the candidates present their visions for the future of the country and its relationship with the United States and rest of the world. With new administrations in both Washington and Seoul, join the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) for a timely discussion on the South Korean election results and its implications for the U.S.-ROK alliance and South Korea’s relations with its Northeast Asian neighbors. The virtual discussion will feature John Delury, Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Affairs at John Cabot University (Rome), Jina Kim, Professor of the Language and Diplomacy Division at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Heung-Kyu Kim, Director of the U.S.-China Policy Institute and Professor of Political Science and Diplomacy at Ajou University, and Ellen Kim, Director of Academic Affair at the Korea Economic Institute of America; moderated by Emma Chanlett-Avery, ASPI Director of Political-Security Affairs.
